15/05/19; Report by GoHF Volunteer, Dougie Brown...
The province, on the east side of the mouth of the Chao Phraya and now easily accessible by BTS from central Bangkok, is a popular tourist destination for locals but is also home to some heavy industry due to it's location near the port. Tanneries, garment factories and seafood processing plants attract migrant workers in huge numbers who end up living in shacks made from wood, corrugated iron, plastic bags and cardboard boxes. The first of our visits was to a small, mostly Khmer, settlement next door to a factory and adjacent to a compressed rubbish tip. |
The second of our visits took us along a potholed road by the side of what looked to be a heavily polluted lake. Trucks came and went all the time and only a young entrepreneur with a juice trolley, who could have been transplanted from a downtown shopping mall, reminded us how close we were to Bangkok.
Our destination was a community who have been living on a landfill site for over 40 years. Electricity cables were strung up over the roofs and trees to power the fans in the shacks higher up on the tip. Wild boar wandered around and the whole experience was made quite eerie by an odd, chemical odour which possibly came from a nearby tannery. Whilst life seemed unbelievably hard there yesterday afternoon, it's impossible to imagine how tough it is going to be, especially at night, now that the rainy season is here. And as if things weren't bad enough, a large sign was recently put up to announce that the whole community was about to be evicted, including a woman who cannot walk and who has lived there for 40 years. |
We left with a promise to return soon and made our way back past the lake - where even the wild boar won't dip their heads - to our final destination - a shanty town stretching out on two sides of a main road.
This child lives in a makeshift shed built
over a stinking open sewer flowing with chemical discharge.

Please consider purchasing a few sets for the thousands of needy children we will be serving before the end of July 2019
We provide vital aid and edutainment giving projects serving an average 2,000 children in need every month, plus many more families who are living in the slums of Bangkok. We cannot achieve this alone. The support of our donors, campaigners and friends is vital, so we want to make sure that we operate an efficient and effective organisation, directing our donor’s money where it is most needed. This is where our 100% pledge comes in.
In 2005, our Founder, Mr Eddie Haworth (AKA Clown Eckie Corporation) provided more than 500,000-THB ($15,964-USD) as required in legal fees and Government registration fees to set-up the Thai registered charity, Gift of Happiness Foundation. Eddie also provided the main 4x4 off-road capable vehicle needed for the charity to bring essential goods to remote parts of Thailand. He still covers repayments and maintenance costs for the latest 4x4 vehicle, purchased in 2018 at a cost of ฿1.2 million-THB ($38,300-USD). Eddie continued to cover all other running costs until Monroe Consulting Group, Bangkok made a 100% pledged to take-over those costs in 2015.
In 2015, our inspirational gold sponsor, Monroe Consulting Group gave Gift of Happiness Foundation the gift of a brand-new truck and a pledge to provide monthly cash donations to cover the Gift of Happiness Foundation’s core running costs; including administration, fundraising and office costs.
Thanks to the generous support of Monroe Consulting Group, 100% of the money you give to Gift of Happiness Foundation will go directly to Gift of Happiness Foundation projects and not to overhead or administrative costs.
