02/07/12 Dep - BKK - am - Arr- late pm Mahasarakarm Nr Roi Et N.E. Thailand. Ret BKK 05/07/12.
This show and donation tour has now entertained and given happy clown shows and important goods to more children and teachers at five poor schools and communities in Mahasarakarm near Roi Et in N.E. Thailand. We had three volunteers, a clown and two drivers on this trip. We were all based at the hotel near Mahasarakarm's main hospital and traveled out to the rural schools each day. On the last day we celebrated our good friend, Mr. Amarin Nissasoka's birthday before departing on the long road back to Bangkok.
We have also given much needed clothing, toys, educational equipment and other goods to many more of the parents of those children. Total people reached on this tour was well over 1000.
Funding for this trip was donated by three volunteers and a personal donation from a friend of the foundation which helped cover costs of vehicle hire, drivers, accommodation, etc...
I never imagined when I arrived in Bangkok a little over a year ago that I would be traveling around the countryside with a clown, but this week I found myself doing exactly that. Last Monday volunteers Yvonne, Jane and I joined Eckie the Clown and his two drivers on a trip to Mahasarakam near Roi Et in NE Thailand.
Over the next three days we visited around 850 children and many of their parents, teachers and local dignitaries at five schools. We were also joined by another 38 children from an additional school on our final morning. Many of the buildings and equipment are old and one school has had to abandon classrooms in one building as it is now unsafe to use. Children from several villages attend each school.
Eckie used his own truck and hired another van which were both full to bursting with donated, toys, clothing, educational and other goodies for the schools and pupils. At each school the children waived and cheered our arrival and waited eagerly to enter the school assembly area for the show.
The teachers were keen for the children to show us how much English they have learned at school, so while Eckie was setting up, volunteer Jane kept them busy counting up to twenty and those brave enough told us their names and ages.
The children sat on their best behaviour as Eckie began, not at all sure what to expect. It certainly didn’t take long for the laughter to begin. The second the balloons came out many little hands shot up to cover ears and all eyes remained pinned on Eckie as no one wanted to miss a single thing. There were squeals of delight and tears of joy from the children. The look of wonder and surprise on their little faces as Eckie performed his magic tricks is something I will certainly never forget. There was also laughter and applause from the teachers and many of the parents who had come to enjoy the show.
After the entertainment had finished the children lined up to receive toys, clothing and the other donated goods that were handed to the teachers for fair distribution. The teachers then gave us a tour of each school and showed us some of the equipment that had been provided by Gift of Happiness Foundation. They were delighted with our visit and Eckie certainly gave them a day to remember – I know I certainly will.
Sincerely, Jan Davis.
