Je me réveille à l’ aube.

Journey into terra incognita, to Sangkhlaburi.

Benjamin and I had got to know our friend Edward thanks to internet research orchestrated by the expert hands of Professor Ben as I was very busy with my work, sports and other activities.

Taking advantage of my desire to improve myself, I decided to come out of my lair, and that we would all meet this clown who had called out to us.

We had been seduced by the authenticity of the foundation and it seemed to us more valuable to offer ourselves rather than bits and pieces collected here and there. We were immediately put at ease by Edward and his travelling companion Simon, his professional photographer who worked for the biggest British national networks. Understanding them was not easy as we needed to decipher their accents which to us were very unusual. Luckily body language helped comprehension a little. We begin our apprentice-ship in the area of humanitarian work by spending two or three Monday afternoons at the foundation offices, sorting out donated goods into those that were suitable to be given out, and those that could be sold to the local people. There were a few giggles, during the sorting, when we saw thongs and other original garments, imagining them being worn by women in some upcountry camp or village.

We are both somewhat experienced in this sort of work, having worked with disadvantaged people in Brussels or in a training course with the Red Cross. We count down the days confident that this would be an important event in our journey. We would not be disappointed ...

Wednesday, November 13, 2013 8:00 we arrive at the offices of the Foundation. It is already hot and we have to load two trucks of food, gifts, medical and health equipment. The most important part, undoubtedly, is to load the equipment for Edward's clown show.

We are joined by Simon, his driver Amarin, and Sophie, a young English teacher recently arrived in Bangkok.

We exchange hellos and everyone gets along well from the first moment. Profiles are rich and varied. Edward is a complex and mysterious person, an adventurer who has experienced much in his life; I think that he keeps in reserve some surprises for us on this matter. Simon is a photographer of international reputation. He has also worked on documentaries and as a sound engineer for audiovisual networks such as CNN / NBC. The driver has solid experience in dangerous countries such as Iran. It would be not be possible to give a true profile of these participants until the end of our stay.

The road is long and it takes almost 8 hours to get to our destination. Some sleep a little, others share knowledge. Edward is a lover is of salon music and his selections were particularly well chosen. Arriving in the area of the Burmese border we are all subjugated by the magnificent vista of verdant mountains and mysterious lakes. There is also an impressive number of amazing temples. We also go through parks populated by crocodiles, elephants and tigers. We say we will be back soon to revisit this most extraordinary region.

We arrived when it is already dark but we can already sense the beauty of the landscapes that surround our rather basic hotel.

I understand that there are tarantulas in the corners; I who detest spiders am ravished!

We will eat at a restaurant not long opened and we meet with Andy, our coordinator, who will guide us through the various locations in which we will conduct our work.

I'm excited about what lies ahead, I sleep no more than four hours the first night and profit from my early start (5 am) by doing a bit of Thai and taking pictures of sunrise when the light is at its most beautiful. We make a hearty, but not very tasty breakfast.

We arrive at the first school where we are expected by 200 children not yet fully awake but already smiling. It is 10 o'clock, the time to prepare everything and to entertain the kids. It is almost 11:00 when Edward begins his well-established clown show. We are immediately charmed and delighted to see the laughter of all the children, as gifts of love diffusing into our memories for ever.

I wear a cowboy hat and this goes down well with the kids – they adore me, calling me the cowboy who always has a beautiful hat on his head.

Ben is more discreet but equally appreciated.

We leave after our first eventful experience, rich in emotions, hearts filled with the deep and with the ephemeral exchanges that we just had.

Though it was beautiful in the morning, we arrive at the second school in a torrential downpour. Despite this the atmosphere is good and we each find our way to express ourselves, Ben as Edward's right hand man and me as kids entertainer with Sophie who juggles very well. We get them to play with skipping ropes and other improvised amusements. I find in myself ways to communicate naturally with them. I take magical photos of of our magical moments and the stunning countryside of the region. I'm already excited by what we have had the chance to experience but we must rest for the moment.

It is important to understand that despite everything, we need to keep a certain distance from the children without ever rejecting them, tread carefully with the impulses of affection that they throw to us.

Edward gives us his show in front of 400 astonished children. We return tired but happy with this first eventful day.

Some take dinner, others rest at the hotel. I got to sleep between 20.00 and 22.00 hours until 2 am, and get two hours later. I do my abs, pumps and exercises and then enjoy the beautiful sunrise as everyday....

The second day will be even more rich in emotions. We feel a little more at ease and after a show in two schools we end our tour at a safe hostel, occupied by a hundred children who are protected from their own families, from the risk of being beaten or being subjected to sexual abuse.

We return exhausted but happy at duty well performed.

The evening is free and we are going to take a midnight swim near the bridge. Andy and I are the first to jump from it.

Once again a few hours of sleep. This morning of mornings, I am going in a hired boat to visit the temples in the region, surrounded by mountains reminiscent of Dante.

I take some incredible photos, thanks to the almost unearthly light of these places.

It's time to go and after a very tiring journey, there we are, returned to reality, in Bangkok

Thank you to all of you for what you offer to the world and to my soul.
