We delivered another truck load of educational equipment, toys and clothing for the Baan Song Rong School, Laem Yai, Samut Songkhram, Thailand. We also gave an additional great donation of new educational books bought by Parents of Amnuaysilpa Bilingual school in Bangkok.
This school in Samut Somgkram is situated on the coast near the salt flats off the road to the popular tourist destination of Hua Hin. Unlike the seaside resort town, this is a very poor fishing community and many of the children are cared for by older siblings or grandparents, while the (Often single parents) are working long hard, low paid days in the local fishing industry.
They are very needy children and we aim to spend more time and effort providing as much as possible for them to help ease their way through school as they grow-up. We hope they will gain some degree of security knowing that they have our support when they need essential equipment, food and clothing. We believe that this additional security will make it easier for them to study and eventually escape the poverty trap through education.
Please consider helping us provide for the poor in Thailand.

Last time we visited the school, we bought enough rice to feed the children lunches for a month. With some help from YOU - We can do the same again...One large bag of rice last one week and costs 1,200THB ($39USD). We buy it locally, thereby helping the local economy as well as the children...

HAPPINESS IN THAILAND
Gift of Happiness Foundation and Wanneroo Rotary Club Perth gave vital equipment to
Wat Sam Ma Kan School - Thursday 10th May 2012. We are delighted to say that we have acquired 10 computers after many long negotiations between us and our great friend from the Liverpudlian-side-of-down-town Perth - Australia...
'The Great Mrs. Debbie Singh' and all the Rotarian's from Wanneroo Rotary Club have brought all this equipment over from the land down-under, so that our children can learn modern-day skills that may enable them to escape the poverty trap that they and their families are in.
This important donation of computers and flat-screen monitors is the biggest single donation of such equipment that the school has ever had and they are absolutely delighted to have received these gifts. The new computers are now placed in a special computer studies room that we equipped with good air-conditioning and insulation - Funded by a cash donation from the BCTFN (British Community in Thailand Foundation for the Needy).
Bangkok South Rotary Club gave a great set of library books which were funded by a relative of one of their Danish members...Thank you...'Florian Herold'
Gift of Happiness Foundation also gave another truck load of toys, educational equipment and about half a ton of Thai teaching and colouring books.
We arranged a VIP bus to leave the Dusit Thani hotel in Bangkok and we handed-over the computers and all the other donations on arrival to our school in Ayutthaya.
There was much fun and frivolity as well as some serious Monk blessings and 'Thank-You's' for a couple of hours...All this was followed by a funny show by Clown Eckie. Then some serious eating, drinking and more fun with the Antipodean Rotarian's at a wonderful riverside restaurant...Then a sleepy trip back to the Dusit Thani Hotel in Bangkok, just in time for afternoon tea...
Thank you to all who attended and helped make this day one of the most memorable days in the lives of our children in Ayutthaya!

<![CDATA[New uniforms - Books- Musical equipment for our school in Ayutthaya]]>Sat, 24 Mar 2012 17:58:53 -0800http://www.gohappiness.org/1/post/2012/03/new-uniforms-books-musical-equipment-for-our-school-in-ayutthaya.html
Gift of Happiness Foundation at Wat Sam Ma Kan School - Friday 23 March 2012.
We gave hard wearing new uniforms for the children to wear once a week when they return from their summer holidays in May. These new uniforms are the second part of our two stage commitment to provide long lasting smart school-wear, that can even be handed-down to younger siblings as the children grow-up. Donations from parents of the Amnuay Silpa Bilingual School and the Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach helped us buy the uniforms.
We also gave new Thai text books that will be ready for use during their next term and will remain useful until 2013. The books were paid for and donated by parents of the Amnuay Silpa Bilingual School in Bangkok.
We helped with music education when we gave the very talented head teacher a top quality electronic keyboard which he played during a traditional Thai dance by the children and teachers and will continue to use as a teaching aid.
We were delighted to see that Karen Armstroung from Harrogate in the UK had arrived a couple of weeks ago and volunteered her services as an English teacher at the school. This is great news for the children and for us. We have been trying to negotiate some funding from another group in the UK to enable us to employ an English teacher at the school. Now that Karen is helping, we can extend our deadline to finalize those negotiations.
Just a note about the children at this school;
They are all from very poor families who's parents or guardians make sure the children are properly fed and receive a basic education - Most parents are surviving on hand-outs from organizations like ours or poverty-line wages in return for long hard days of work in local factories that survived the floods.
We are committed to helping these children - We need your help to provide essential equipment and teaching resources to help us give them a chance of receiving a better education.

Lots of children know Eddie Haworth - he's Eckie the Clown, who teaches refugee kids, flood victims and primary pupils about the good things in life
Eddie Haworth is a long-time street performer and circus clown who's entertained people around the world. He says Western and Thai children are different from the Burmese and ethnic children he entertains on the border.
The latter are more wary of foreigners visiting them, though. That's partly why he keeps going back to give them a laugh.
"The main difference between rich and poor kids is the poor kids lack self-confidence" he says. "They're often afraid to laugh. They're not used to a big, fat foreign bloke making a fool of himself.
"Sometimes their first thought is that we're a bunch of doctors. Then they start giggling, rather than thinking, 'When are they going to stick the needles in?' They go from being timid, frightened kids to cracking up on the floor."
Years ago Eddie was the manager of a bottle-gas company with dreams of owning a Volvo, until a bad road crash led him to clowning. Now he's hooked on entertaining disadvantaged children.
"I benefit a lot from it. It's good, honest, clean fun. That's half the reason I do this."
He didn't like it when he first got to Bangkok in the late 1990s - coming from northern England he found it too hot.
Being a professional clown in Britain had become a bit tedious at that stage - he was spending more time driving to London than anything else. The money was good, but with the end of his second marriage and his two kids grown up, it was a lonely life. So he gave Thailand another shot.
Getting established as an entertainer here was tough. He was lucky to get a contract with a big hotel. Then he found an old tuk-tuk van that had been used to deliver laundry down the narrow streets of Yaowarat, and converted it into a "clown-mobile".
It's like a three-wheeled billboard that's garnered him recognition. You can often see it in the car park outside the Dusit Thani Hotel, where he puts on shows every Sunday.
As well as working as a professional clown, Eddie spent at least five years going through the legal hoops required to register a charity in Thailand, and the expense - several hundred thousand baht. This is his Gift of Happiness Foundation.
On weekends he's Clown Eckie, hired by five-star hotels and parties for expatriate children and well-to-do Thai families. Midweek he's plain Eddie, maybe doing charity gigs on the border or at flooded-out schools in Ayutthaya.
The labour brings him and the needy kids joy, and good feelings for him and his supporters, some of them expat women who love nothing more than helping those with less.
His first trip to the border was 10 years ago, and he's returned often to give thousands of impoverished kids a laugh.
Early last month Eddie drove to Mae Sot with a van full of supporters and a load of mosquito nets, clothes and items such as wheelchairs for refugees and landmine victims at one of the main camps. They also gave money and toys to the Mae Tao Clinic run by acclaimed Karen physician Cynthia Maung.
Eddie did a range of shows over several days - a 30-minute routine packed with the usual slapstick fare - for hundreds of Karen, at a school for children who scavenge for plastic at the Mae Sot dump and at a centre for street kids.
He used to ride a big unicycle while playing the concertina, but at 59 he's jettisoned the vehicle. Still, he's got a special talent for making a fool of himself, and plenty of tricks to keep the kids amused.
"I love doing what I do," Eddie says. "It's a struggle ... sometimes hard work making a living, but I can't imagine not doing what I do."
